Your Pet's First Exam

It's great to welcome a new pet into your home. What most of us forget is the first line of examination that's essential to understand your pet's current health condition. Make sure that your new pet is healthy with a first exam.

Our experienced professionals will check your pet for health problems. With this exam, you'll be able to understand any special needs that your fur buddy may have. The first exam can also be an opportunity for your pet to get vaccinated or registered. You can even schedule spay or neuter surgery, and get to know the new vet at this time.

Vaccinations and Parasite Prevention

Vaccination is the most effective method of preventing diseases. Doctors recommend a series of vaccinations to prevent common diseases in young puppies and kittens.

Though a single vaccination doesn't ensure complete protection, this process does help in keeping diseases at bay in a majority of the cases.  Count on us to keep you informed about the frequency of shots and the vaccination schedule.

Fleas, ticks, and worms cause discomfort, and carry diseases that infect your pets. Our qualified team will prescribe the right medication to prevent such pests. We also offer core vaccination programs and treatment options against various diseases and parasites.

Registration and Rabies Vaccinations

Stephenson County and Ogle County require that all dogs be registered annually. Winnebago Country requires that dogs and cats be registered. We offer registration for Stephenson, Ogle, and Winnebago counties. Rabies vaccinations are mandatory for all four counties.

Pet IDs and Microchips

A microchip is a small computer chip containing a unique identification number that helps ID a pet. Microchipping is compulsory for dogs registered in the city of Freeport. The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and it is implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades.

Microchipping does not cause any discomfort and has the advantage of permanence. A single chip should last the lifetime of your pet.

You may not be able to live track your pet with this microchip. It is an internal ID tag that allows a lost pet to be reunited with its owner. The major disadvantage of microchips is that you must take the pet to a veterinarian or an animal shelter (or any other organization that has a digital reader) to track the owner.

Pet ID tags help differentiate a pet from a stray. The ID tag contains your information so that the finder can contact you directly instead of going through the vet or shelter.

When you move or need to update information, you are more likely to notice an ID tag than a hidden microchip. That said, the best way to ensure that you can be reunited with your lost pet is to use both a traditional ID tag and
a microchip.

Spaying and Neutering

You should consider spaying or neutering at about 5-6 months of age for cats and 6 months of age for dogs. It is fine to get the surgeries done post-sexual maturity.

It is observed that males that have been neutered are expected to be less aggressive and territorial (including urinary marking behaviors) than unneutered males. Females should be spayed to prevent unwanted pregnancy and contribution to the pet overpopulation problem. Complications due to difficult pregnancy in pets can result in costly, emergency cesarean delivery.

Continuous Care for Your Pet

Our doctors will conduct routine checkups as pets age faster than humans. All pets should have annual exams, the equivalent of you going to the doctor every 5 years, to ensure that they are in good health. As your pet ages, you may increase the frequency of these routine wellness exams.

Boosters and Parasite Prevention

The law in Stephenson, Carroll, Ogle, and Winnebago counties state that your dog or cat must have rabies vaccinations up-to-date. Discuss about the different needs of your indoor and outdoor pets. Most outdoor pets will benefit from parasite preventatives. We are always here to help you understand what's best for your pet.

Aging

Pets suffer from hearing loss, arthritis, and other issues as they age. When the time comes that your pet is suffering too much, humane euthanasia (putting to sleep) can be administered by a veterinarian.

Other Services

Freeport Animal Hospital supplies Hills Prescription Science Diets. We provide ear and anal gland cleaning for pets too. We have an in-house blood analyzer for routine blood tests.
